JOB TITLE: Technical Director
DEPARTMENT: Production
LOCATION: Toronto, Canada
OPPORTUNITY:
To work alongside the President and Chief Technology Officer in a tactically oriented
function to help the company continue to scale up and grow. The Company, which
develops proprietary SaaS products and services, seeks a senior level IT professional
that can operate as a strategic technologist as well as a tactical department
manager. The candidate will need to be bright, imaginative, and a capable
technologist with strong communication skills, specifically seeking a smaller
environment where they will impact the direction of the organization and be a key
contributor to the overall success of the business.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To provide functional support and expand capabilities in the areas of client
development & management, project management, programming, and
administration. This function provides the initial step in the process of delivering
integrated business and information solutions. The role requires the ability to
develop and deliver presentations to clients and to look for business opportunities
that are used to develop detailed business and technical specifications, projected
costs and proposals.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Architecture & Design: interviewing and gathering client requirements to
translate into detailed project plans that meet budgets and deadlines.
• Team Management: Manage all work teams including technical, creative, and
production, as well external suppliers and contractors
• Project management: interface with clients to scope projects, manage budgets
and direct the development cycle from inception to completion
• Programming/development: assist the programmers and developers through
designing, coding, testing, deploying, maintaining, and supporting client
initiatives
• Administration: infrastructure development that will enhance the scalability of the
organization, allowing the proper systems and processes to be integrated with
the business’ best practices ensuring consistency and stability.
• Code Library: Manage and grow existing code library and development
framework for rapid application design and development (RADD).
• Manage all work teams including technical, creative, and production, quality
assurance, as well external suppliers and contractors
SKILLS:
• Ability to manage teams and increase productivity while guiding projects from
concept through to completion
• Ability to effective manage multiple projects/tasks of varying complexities, meet
deadlines and work well under pressure
• Ability to direct all phases of project cycle including analysis, design,
functionality, testing and support
• Ability to architect massively scalable, widely available web applications based on
a combination of business and user requirements
• Has extensive knowledge of business issues and processes as well as IT
resources and enabling technologies.
• Ability to conduct needs assessments with clients to identify business and
marketing requirements to translate into a project plans
• Ability to look for business opportunities to streamline processes with automated
solutions, both internally and externally
• Ability to work independently on strategic issues with client, capable of managing
fairly complex projects
• Ability to communicate clearly with business users and project manager
• Ability to innovate and provide functional applications with intuitive interfaces
• Ability to construct user guides and documentation
QUALIFICATIONS & RELATED EXPERIENCE:
Management Experience:
• Minimum 8 years in information technology industry and at least 3 years in a
department management role
• Developing project plans, define roles and responsibilities and assigned tasks
• Developing and implementing techniques to measure team productivity
• Developing, producing and refining proposals and scheduling future work
• Conducting performance reviews for the team, evaluating performance and
making recommendations for personnel actions to motivate employees to achieve
peak productivity and performance
• Providing assistance and guidance in the interview and selection of staff
• Setting up ‘lunch and learn’ sessions to encourage knowledge transfer
• Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Business or Information
Technology an asset
Technical Qualifications:
• Technical Knowledge: MS .NET 2.0, C#, VB.NET, MS SQL/T-SQL, ASP.NET,
ADO.NET, Visual Studio 2005
• Working Knowledge: XML, HTML, JavaScript/DHTML, AJAX, CSS, Adobe GoLive or
Macormedia Dreamweaver
• Experience architecting and developing SaaS solutions, Content Management
Systems (CMS), utilizing Telerik’s R.A.D. Editor controls or similar third-party
software
• Experience with front end UI design an asset
